Attendees of the first Action for Hogshaw’s Dawn Chorus Walks on Saturday 28 March were rewarded with an array of 22 resident birds. Particular highlights included the sighting of curlew and a wood pigeon on her nest in a pine tree.

Lindsay Wakefield skilfully guided the group around the site, spotlighting birdsong and sightings of many species including; chiffchaff, goldcrest, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, long tailed tit, bullfinch, chaffinch, house sparrow, starling, song thrush, mistle thrush, blackbird, robin, wren, dunnock, wood pigeon, jackdaw, carrion crow, magpie and curlew. A great showing for late March and testament to the value and biodiversity of our patch.
Although a subtler experience this time a year than the full song of later spring, this was the perfect opportunity to clearly pick out key species from their distinctive calls. The group included experienced birders who helpfully shared their knowledge and a peer through their binoculars and novices who joined in with the use of birdsong apps – though the experts identified the birds quicker than the apps!
If this has made you excited for more birding or simply to experience the joyful sounds of nature, join us for our late spring Dawn Chorus Walk on 9 May 2026 when reknowed naturalist, Mark Cocker, will help us appreciate the full orchestral experience of Hogshaw’s bird population. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you. Click here to book for this free event.
