Hogshaw: An Inspiration for Art

Artwork by Claire Parker inspired by the living ferns of Hogshaw

This month we are spotlighting the work of two local artists who draw their inspiration from Hogshaw.

The first is Georgia Wild, a committee member of Action for Hogshaw who helped create our beautiful new leaflet shown below:

“Fairfield is my home and paths into the Peaks are metres away- Derbyshire’s spectacular hills and valleys pulled me here twenty years ago.

When not at work or tied up with family I hike, cycle or simply tramp through footpaths from my doorstep. And I draw, mainly in paint and mostly outside.

There is energy in making marks – humans have done it for thousands of years – I just try to absorb what’s around me and distil what I see and experience. Sometimes I find a motif or theme in these drawings and make other works from them in my studio shed.”

“A day walking Kinder or Combs Edge is fantastic but for my art work it’s the liminal pockets of land I seek out; ex- industrial land, the strange, deep quarry lakes, railway sidings, land on boundaries and sites earmarked for development – and forgotten.

These are the places we see on the way to somewhere else, but for me they become destinations in their own right which I’m drawn to and draw from. These places are not comfortable or settled- I’m not interested in recreating the picturesque- my drawings are more about exploring the uncertainty and being immersed in the moments before it’s claimed or changed.

I hail from the Potteries, so maybe it’s in my DNA – my childhood playground was old colliery land, trespassing on abandoned steel works and climbing ‘shardruck’ ceramic waste tips. 1980’s industrial decline left nature to break through, and I loved its resilience, however temporary that might be.

Hogshaw is one such place I am drawn to. It links Lightwood and Brown Edge to Fairfield and Cunningdale for humans and nature alike and it’s on the cusp of change.”
